Terms of Service

Penumbra - Shadow Journal · Effective date: July 21, 2026 · Last updated: July 21, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Penumbra iOS application (bundle identifier xyz.bogtsi.umbra) and any content or features it provides (the "App"). The App is provided by an individual developer based in Israel ("we", "us", or "our"). By downloading, accessing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

Self-reflection, not therapy. Penumbra is a self-reflection journaling tool. It is not therapy, not medical care, and not a substitute for professional mental health support. See Section 5.
If you are in crisis. If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, or you are otherwise in crisis, please reach out for real help right away: in the United States, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), available 24/7, or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). Outside the United States, findahelpline.com can connect you with a helpline in your country. Penumbra's own Crisis Resources screen lists these same resources and is reachable at any time, including before you unlock the app.

1. License to use the App

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to download and use the App on Apple devices that you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use. This license is granted under the terms of Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA), which applies to your use of the App as an application obtained through the App Store; where these Terms are silent, Apple's standard EULA governs.

You may not copy, modify, reverse-engineer, decompile, sublicense, sell, rent, or otherwise exploit the App or its content except as expressly permitted by these Terms or applicable law.

2. Subscriptions, billing & auto-renewal

Penumbra offers an optional auto-renewing subscription ("Penumbra Pro") that unlocks additional features — including the two premium guided journeys, the full 120-prompt reflection deck and its second dive-deeper layer, the inner-child & parts exercises, the Insights screen, and PDF export. Penumbra remains fully usable without it: the free 7-day journey, thirty deck prompts, the freeform journal, the trigger log, the app lock, reminders, plain-text export, and the Crisis Resources screen are all free forever. Subscriptions and payments are handled by Apple through the App Store; we never receive or store your payment card details.

Subscription entitlements are managed through RevenueCat on our behalf. See our Privacy Policy for details on the data involved.

3. Advertising

The App contains no advertising and no advertising SDK. If we enable advertising in a future update, this section and our Privacy Policy will be updated before it ships.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

5. Not therapy, not medical care

Some prompts and journeys intentionally ask you to reflect on difficult material — childhood, family patterns, shame, triggers, and similar territory — and may bring up strong or uncomfortable feelings. Every prompt in the App can be skipped, and you are always free to close the App, take a break, or return another day. Sessions covering more sensitive territory display an in-app content note before they begin.

Please take care of yourself. If reflecting on something in the App ever feels like more than you can hold alone, or if you are in crisis, reaching out to a licensed professional or a crisis line is a sign of strength, not a step backward. Penumbra's Crisis Resources screen — reachable at any time, including from the lock screen before you unlock the App — lists the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988, USA, 24/7), the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741, USA), and a link to findahelpline.com for helplines outside the United States. In a medical or safety emergency, contact your local emergency services immediately.

6. Intellectual property

The App and all of its content — including software, design, text, and the original journeys, prompts, and exercises — are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. All journeys, prompts, and exercises in the App were authored specifically for Penumbra and are not reproductions of any third-party book, journal, or application. Except for the limited license in Section 1, no rights are granted to you. "Penumbra" and associated marks are our property.

7. Your data

The entries and settings you create in the App are stored on your device, not on a server we operate. You are responsible for keeping your own copies of anything you wish to preserve — the App's text and PDF export exist for that purpose. Deleting the App, or using the delete-all-data option in its Settings, permanently removes that data from your device, and we cannot recover it for you.

8. Third-party services

The App relies on third-party services, including Apple (App Store, LocalAuthentication for the app-lock feature) and RevenueCat. Your use of those services through the App may be subject to their own terms and policies. We are not responsible for the practices of these third parties.

9. Disclaimers of warranty

10. Limitation of liability

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you; in that case, our liability is limited to the smallest extent permitted by law.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the App or your violation of these Terms or of applicable law.

12. Apple-specific terms

These Terms are between you and us only, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the App or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App. In the event of any failure of the App to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price (if any); to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the App. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

13. Termination

These Terms remain in effect while you use the App. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms. You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law) survive.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Israel, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Subject to any mandatory consumer-protection rights available to you under the law of your country of residence, you agree that the competent courts located in Israel will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the App.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and post the new version at this URL. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the changes, stop using the App.
